SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A Puerto Rican woman has accused the premier of the
Turks and Caicos Islands of raping her, police in the British Caribbean
territory said.
Local police and the FBI are investigating the woman's claim
that Premier Michael Misick assaulted her on the night of March 27, deputy
police commissioner Hubert Hughes said Tuesday.
Misick, who has held the
top office since 2003, said in a televised address last week that a woman had
filed a false complaint of sexual assault against him but he would be cleared of
the "outrageous allegations."
The FBI field office in Miami referred
questions to the U.S. Embassy in Barbados, where assistant legal attache Norman
Scott said he could not confirm or deny any U.S. involvement in the
investigation.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory.
