Aquan Lewis tragedy

The boy was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m. this morning at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A janitor at the school had said Anquan had been taken down from a hook in the restroom on Tuesday.

According to a source close to the investigation, the child hanged himself by his shirt on the hook of a bathroom stall door, and a footprint was found on the toilet. The source could not immediately confirm that the boy made the footprint, but said it fit the scenario.

The source said there were ligature impressions on the front and sides of the child's neck, caused as the child was hanged on the hook from the collar of his shirt.

The source said a teacher had scolded him at some point in the day, and the boy told the teacher he was going to hang himself. The timing of the statement and the hanging was not available.

I knew Aquan...he was my son's friend, and he was a great kid. All of this talk about the principle watching him suffocate, the superintedant being incompetent, and the teacher being irresponsible is baseless and uninformed. The principle got him down and performed cpr, and was then joined by the janitor. As for 'how could it be suicide if he didn't die until 4 am', the actions of the principle, janitor and paramedics recessutated him and he got the hospital in critical condition, was transfered to Children's and finally passed. The administration, faculty, and staff at Oakton are caring, dedicated, extremely competent, and decent people. They devote themselves to helping their students in all facets of life, often volunteering for special activities on weekends. I am very thankful my son attends Oakton.
